The Zika virus continues to cause concern around the world as the World Health Organization issues new guidelines and Malaysia confirms its first case of the zika virus in a pregnant woman.

Asked whether the woman would be allowed to undergo an abortion, Dr Subramaniam said: "We allow medical therapeutical abortion in cases if the life of the mother is threatened from the pregnancy".

Around 400 houses have been examined and 450 premises fogged since Zika was discovered in Johor.

Zika infections in pregnant women have been shown to cause microcephaly, a severe birth defect in which the head and brain are undersized, besides other brain abnormalities.

The pregnant woman came down with a rash, fever and body aches last Friday, and visited a hospital to seek treatment on Monday.

He also said that the Cabinet, at its meeting today, decided that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi chair a Committee on Environmental Cleanliness.

The country's Health Ministry said the blood and urine tests of 30 other suspected victims were found to be negative for the virus.
