Texas State District Judge Michael McSpadden sentenced a teacher to a decade behind bars on Friday - in part, he said, to "send a message" about what we need from those who educate our children. Her sentence was capped at 30 years after she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.
Vera taught English in the Aldine Independent School District in north Houston in 2015 when she met the student.
Vera will be eligible for parole in five years.
Vera became pregnant by the teen and later had an abortion when she was questioned about the relationship, according to court records.
The Washington Post reported Vera admitted to having sex with the boy "on nearly a daily basis", after their relationship began in 2015.
Prosecutors said that between September 30, 2015, and January 30, 2016, Vera had sex at least two times with her eighth-grade student, who was 13 at the time. She said they met during summer school, and the boy asked to follow her on Instagram.

Alexandria Vera, a middle school teacher in Houston, was sentenced to 10 years for having sex with a 13-year-old student. She said she initially resisted the boy's advances until sometime last fall, when she agreed to hang out with her student.
In June, Vera turned herself into police after investigators uncovered evidence of her sexual relationship with the boy.
"She's someone who has a big heart", Lawson said. She told an investigator that she would drop him off at home in the morning so he could catch the bus to Stovall Middle School, prosecutors said.
A therapist spoke on Vera's behalf Friday and said that she was in love with the student, who reportedly looked older than 13, and was not a "traditional pedophile". After the open house, Vera went to the student's home and was introduced as his girlfriend to his parents.
The boy's mother was in court Monday in support of Vera and her relationship with her son, even asking the judge to show leniency.
