Honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A couple of events are planned in the Coachella Valley this weekend to mark the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The first real holiday of the year is upon us in the form of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Non-essential Government departments are closed, as are many corporations.

Regina Nichols leads the Community Choir Wednesday as it rehearses for Monday's Martin Luther King Day program at Mount Emory Baptist Church. "Martin Luther King represented community spirit, and I suppose, for me, it's part of recognizing that attribute to help the community", said Girl Power volunteer Norce Harris-Bolete. "We have to continue to keep it that way".

"We definitely want to remove any doubt that that piece of paper or that term or official name".

As local marching bands and other local groups trekked down E. Green Drive for the 16th annual Martin Luther King Jr.

A panel discussion, "Campus and Community: Hand in Hand", will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 in the Student Union Ballroom.

"That speech really inspires us as a nation, as a people, as humans to understand that we all can have a dream", said Reverend T.R Dunn, with the Abundant Apostolic Church. "We want to encourage people to take a cause of action in their lives to make a positive difference in the community". Students at the elementary-, middle- and high-school levels were invited to participate in an essay contest. Younger students will be read books and stories on how to be leaders in their classroom.

Those white leaders had said although they supported the cause of the Civil Rights Movement, the time wasn't right to protest. Activities include socializing with senior citizens; cleaning the Melrose Public Library; preparing meals for families in need; teaching children about the legacy of Dr. King; bowling with youths now experiencing homelessness; and the facilitation of MLK-themed activities for young children. "That's what we need".
