A top aide of US President Donald Trump, Kellyanne Conway, was "counselled" by the White House and criticized by lawmakers for promoting the president's daughter, Ivanka's fashion line during an appearance on Fox News. Conway, in a Thursday morning interview from the White House briefing room, urged people to "go buy Ivanka's stuff."It's a wonderful line". "I'm going to give it a free commercial here", Conway said.

Speaking on Thursday, Ms Conway said: "Go buy Ivanka's stuff".

The committee's chairman, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, told NBC News that he and Cummings are "jointly going to send a letter to the White House and Office of Government Ethics for a referral" on Conway.

One of United States president Donald Trump's closet aides has urged the public to buy items from a clothing and jewellery line named after Mr Trump's daughter Ivanka.

"This endorsement of specific merchandise would appear to violate ethics laws and regulations, which clearly bar federal employees from endorsing any product or enterprise for private gain", the senators said.

Nordstrom has defended its decision to drop Ivanka's wares, citing performance.

The Conway controversy comes a day after Trump raised eyebrows by tweeting that his daughter had been treated "unfairly" by Nordstrom.

Different government agencies have different penalties for rules violations for employees using public office for private gain, with some imposing a five-day suspension to removal, and others recommending a two week suspension to removal for the offense.

Conway tweeted Friday that she had the President's support.

Federal employees are banned from using their public office to endorse products.

On Wednesday, Trump tore into Nordstrom for mistreating his daughter by discontinuing the brand.

The comment drew fire for possibly violating ethics laws.

Asked about Conway's actions, White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters Thursday: "Kellyanne has been counseled. on that subject".

Retailers still selling Ivanka Trump products include Macy's, TJX Cos and Hudson's Bay Co.
