Wolfsburg name Arsenal academy boss Andries Jonker as new manager

Ismael's predecessor, Dieter Hecking, was sacked seven games into the season.

Wolfsburg are now 14th in the Bundesliga standings and face a Matchday 23 trip to Mainz on Saturday.

The 54-year-old, who operated as assistant and tactical coach at Wolfsburg between 2012 and 2014, has signed with the Wolves until 2018.

Ismael, who took over on October 17, managed only five victories in 15 league games with nine defeats.

"Andries Jonkers knows VfL Wolfsburg, and kept in regular contract following his move to London", the club's sporting director Olaf Rebbe said on the club's official website.

He incorrectly suggested that there was a terror attack in Sweden last Friday, puzzling the Nordic country's leadership. Criticising Europe's handling of terrorism, he said that Americans could not let similar attacks happen in the US.

"Both factors were vital in us achieving this top solution so quickly". The French coach was dismissed after a fifth defeat in sixth games left the club perilously close to the Bundesliga relegation zone, and have turned to a familiar face to drag them away from danger.

Jonker previously worked as assistant coach to Louis van Gaal at Bayern Munich, taking over as head coach on an interim basis for five games in 2011 when his compatriot was sacked.

"He is a coach with global experience and a proven tactician, who brings with him the best conditions to help get VfL quickly and sustainably back on the path to success".

Hecking led Wolfsburg to the quarterfinals of the Champions League last year, after claiming the German Cup title and second place in the Bundesliga the year before.

However, he has now been lured away by the Bundesliga outfit, where he will work alongside Jonker, who has also left the Gunners. He was asked to leave after the 5-0 loss at home to Bayern Munich in December.
