Holland, on the other hand, are fourth in their group and sacked Coach Danny Blind following a shock 2-0 defeat in Bulgaria on Saturday.
The Netherlands, which failed to qualify for the European Championship in France last year, looks likely to struggle to reach the World Cup in Russian Federation, which comes four years after the Dutch team coached by Louis van Gaal reached the semifinal in Brazil.
He said on www.knvb.nl: "Because the sporting results are disappointing and it will now be hard to qualify for the World Cup in Russian Federation, we feel unfortunately we have to say goodbye to him".
Fred Grim will take charge as interim coach when the Netherlands face Italy on Tuesday.
Bulgaria stunned the Dutch with two goals in the first 20 minutes, both coming from Spas Delev, who opened his global account.
Oil Sands Pipeline from Canada Is in US National Interest
President Donald Trump's administration, as expected, has officially greenlighted the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline . In addition to Native American tribes, environmental groups like 350.org and others said they're fighting the project.
But De Ligt's dream debut quickly became a nightmare, making two fatal errors in the first 20 minutes before suffering the indignity of being substituted at half time to save further humiliation. When a country like the Netherlands in not present at a European Championship (Euro 2016) and is running the risk of not going to the World Cup in Russian Federation 2018 then there is something not right. So many "incidents" can not be mere coincidence and these poor results make Blind's parting shot sound delusional. "We have a lot of players like Kevin Strootman, Georginio Wijnaldum and Bas Dost who are perfectly fine at a decent level and some of the younger players might do something spectacular in the future" says Jongsma.
Ronald Koeman is clearly capable of becoming the next Netherlands boss, according to the KNVB's professional football director Jean Paul Decossaux. No foreigner has coached the Dutch national team since the great Austrian Ernst Happel led it to the 1978 World Cup final in Argentina.
"A foreign coach is an option and our list should include all kinds of names".
Who'll replace Blind? Louis van Gaal, who took the Dutch just three years ago at the World Cup in Brazil, is available.
Their next World Cup qualifier is at home to neighbours Luxembourg on 9 June.
