Monster Storm Set To Touchdown in Northeast

American Airlines canceled all flights to New York City's two airports Tuesday as carriers grounded more than 5,300 trips ahead of a winter storm that threatens to batter the U.S. Northeast.

As of 9:40 a.m. ET Monday, more than 810 flights into or out of the US have been canceled, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.com.

Southwest Airlines canceled 1,333 flights in response to the winter storm, including many of those in and out Baltimore, Boston, Washington, D.C., NY and Philadelphia.

United Airlines is offering travelers flying through Chicago O'Hare and airports in the northeastern USA through March 15 the chance to change their flight without fee for new flights departing on or before March 17 in the same cabin class between the original city pair. "Each airline has an app and they'll usually send you text alerts whenever there's a change in your flight". Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport more than one hundred flights in and out of airports across the upper northeast have been canceled.

Southwest Airlines cancelled 884 flights scheduled for Tuesday, while JetBlue has cancelled more than 600.

Delta said it had cancelled over 900 flights, 800 of those not operating on Tuesday.

New York City might be spared but the worst is still yet to come for the rest of the northeast, as the brunt of the snowstorm was expected Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday night will likely be the coldest, forecasters say. And while the cancellations aren't impacting most of the flight coming into and leaving out of KCI, the airport recommends you check the flight schedule before you head to the airport.

American canceled all flights before 8 a.m. ET on Tuesday. The airline is planning to resume normal operations Wednesday morning.

Their original flight to Newark, N.J. was canceled Monday due to the storm.
