Panetta said Trump should move on to other pressing issues in the U.S., like healthcare and immigration.
"I never believed it from the beginning", he said. "Or just some terrorist group out there: where the president gets real intelligence, saying that a real attack could be occurring, and people may think it's the same as his tweet about Obama".
Whether or not Congressional committees find evidence of surveillance of the Trump campaign or of Russian influence they are determined to track down the source of newspaper reports of undisclosed contact between former national security adviser Michael Flynn and Mr Kislyak, described by U.S. intelligence sources as a spy recruiter. "He asked for an investigation by the House and Senate Intelligence Committees". He fired Flynn last month after reports he had discussed sanctions with Russia's ambassador before Trump took office, without telling other White House officials.
"With respect to the president's tweets about alleged wiretapping directed at him by the prior administration, I have no information that supports those tweets, and we have looked carefully inside the FBI", Comey said.
"The one crime we know that's been committed is that one: the leaking of someone's name", Nunes said.
French presidential candidate Fillon under fraud investigation
It's a considerable step towards a trial but such investigations have been known to be dropped in the past before going to court. If Fillon can take some small solace, it's that he is not alone among the candidates in drawing investigators' scrutiny.
He said he had not seen any evidence to back up the allegations, but would "investigate each and every one of these things".
Mr Trump has remained adamant that his claims need to be investigated, and Congress agreed to do so.
The White House was after White House spokesman Sean Spicer cited Fox News analyst Andrew Napolitano's comments about British intelligence possibly helping President Obama spy on then candidate Trump. The British intelligence agency flatly denied the claim it happened.
The issue led to an awkward moment on Friday at a joint news conference with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel when Trump was asked about the wiretap claims by a German reporter.
"In terms of wiretapping the president in Trump Tower by the former president, it just didn't happen", Flake told KTAR News 92.3 FM's Mac & Gaydos.
