US Attorney Preet Bharara Tweets That He Has Been Fired

It is customary for the country's 93 US attorneys to leave their positions once a new president is in office, but the departures are not automatic. Career attorneys are to carry on the work until new USA attorneys are put in place, the Justice Department said. Bharara was appointed by former President Barack Obama in 2009, and he was long a bipartisan voice against public corruption.

"By asking for the immediate resignation of every remaining US Attorney before their replacements have been confirmed or even nominated, the president is interrupting ongoing cases and investigations and hindering the administration of justice", Schumer said in a statement on Facebook.

Friday evening, the law enforcement official said, Bharara told his section chiefs that he'd yet to submit the requested letter and may instead challenge Sessions to fire him.

He added that being the US Attorney for New York Southern District would forever be "the greatest honor" of his professional life.

Martinez is among the 40 plus U.S. Attorneys asked to resign amid the President's transition. "Moments ago I was sacked", Bharara wrote on Twitter. More recently, he's successfully prosecuted over a dozen state officeholders from both political parties.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is seeking the resignations of 46 USA attorneys who were holdovers from the Obama administration.

According to CNN, Acting Deputy Attorney General Dana Boente informed Bharara of his firing. They report to Justice Department leadership in Washington, and their priorities are expected to be in line with those of the attorney general. On Friday, however, Bharara received the same call as the other federal attorneys but indicated he would not be resigning.
