Dave Chappelle Honored Charlie Murphy With John Mayer Last Night

The two reminisced about planning Murphy's famous "True Hollywood Stories" sketches on Chappelle's Show and how Prince flatly turned down appearing in one sketch and later regretted it.

Later, Murphy worked as head of security for his younger brother, the actor Eddie Murphy. He then joined the "Love On The Weekend" singer for a performance of "You're Gonna Live Forever On Me", which reminded him of "my friend Charlie Murphy - our friend Charlie Murphy".

CHARLIE MURPHY: Prince, you got a towel, man? "John, if you would, there was a night, maybe four months ago, where we were at Hotel Café in L.A.", Chappelle said.

In the recurring segment "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories", Murphy would recount how his brother's fame brought him into the orbit of the biggest stars, such as Rick James and Prince, who died almost a year ago.

Charlie, who was best known for starring on Dave Chappelle's sketch comedy series Chappelle's Show, passed away at a New York City hospital where he'd been undergoing chemotherapy, his manager told TMZ. Prior to the "Chapelle's Show", no one would have even listened to me in the frame of, oh, he's trying to be amusing, you know?

He collaborated with writing his brother's starring films, Norbit and Vampire in Brooklyn.

"For me to start a comedy career after he established that was really a big risk", he said.
