Garrett dazzles in debut, Reds beat Cardinals 2-0

The Cardinals bats hung Leake out to dry, as he and Kolten Wong tallied the only hits off Reds rookie left-hander Amir Garrett, who made his Major League Baseball debut in the game. The 24-year-old top prospect struck out four batters while throwing 50 out of 78 pitches for strikes.
Garrett progressed through the Reds' minor league ranks following his decision to depart from St. John's University where he was a member of the basketball team.
Raisel Iglesias picked up the save.
The final three innings went well with only one Cardinals hitter reaching base on a walk by Iglesias during the night.
One out later, Joey Votto laced the first pitch into the right-field corner for a double that easily scored Hamilton for the only run Cincinnati required.
DETROIT - Rookie JaCoby Jones walked on a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to force in the go-ahead run that made Detroit's home opener a success.

Michael Wacha, 6-1 in his career against the Reds, had an easy five-pitch first inning but had a bit more trouble in the second. Jason Castro's two-run homer in the sixth was his first of the season and briefly pulled Minnesota to within 3-2.
Votto's double in the sixth scored Billy Hamilton.

"It's a shame to lose a great start like that", St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said.

Leake pitched well, scattering six hits while striking out six and walking one.

Reds: Kevin Mesoraco (right hip surgical recovery) was not to have a day off Sunday in his injury rehabilitation assignment at Double-A Pensacola, then catch nine innings Monday.
