Rory McIlroy says tests indicate no new injury to his back

Rory McIlroy will undergo an MRI scan on his back after the Players Championship after it caused some more niggles during his second round.

Rory McIlroy will undergo an MRI scan in Belfast on Monday to discover the extent of a back injury which is threatening to blight not only this Players Championship but his entire summer.

The four-time major victor said he realizes he's somewhat limited this week and will have to work his way into contention with what he has before a little more time off prior to his U.S. Open lead-in and prep.

The 28-year-old was ruled out for nearly two months at the start of the year after suffering a stress fracture to his ribs, and there were fears he was facing another spell out.

"It's in the same area as the injury at the start of the year", McIlroy added. "If that injury was an 8 or a 9 in terms of pain and soreness and stiffness, this is around a 4 or 5", he said. I think I birdied two of the par-fives, but it's a golf course where it is hard to hit it close, you're firing away from pins quite a lot and you're just sort of trying to bide your time and stay patient, especially on a windy day like today. Hopefully that's what it shows in the scan. "But there are so many unknowns and unless you get an image taken of it you just don't know".

"I'm not going to lie, I would have loved to have played better than I did the first two days but it has been overwhelming, I'm not going to lie", he said.

McIlroy said he's been trying to sleep on his right side at night, but that has created another interesting development for the newlywed. "What's going on?'" laughed McIlroy, who got married to Erica several weeks ago after the Masters. Instead of maybe gradually building it up again, I hit balls for four or five hours on Friday and did the same on Saturday. "I have good momentum going into the weekend", Rahm said.
