Veteran Bollywood actress Reema Lagoo passes away at 59

Condolences to the actress poured in on Twitter, including a message from Narendra Modi, the Indian prime minister.

Veteran Indian film and TV actor Reema Lagoo, 59, passed away after a cardiac arrest in Mumbai today.

Lagoo's co-actors from "Naamkarann" were also shocked and deeply saddened by her sudden death.

Reema Lagoo's son-in-law told news office PTI, "She was grumbling of trunk torment so we took her to healing facility around 1 am".

This morning, senior actress Reema Lagoo passed away due to a cardiac arrest.

Lagoo has mostly acted in supporting roles with some of the biggest names in the Hindi film industry. The couple has a daughter, Mrunmayee, together who is also an actress.

Besides films, Reema was also popular for starring in TV shows such as Tu Tu Main Main, Shrimaan Shrimati and other Marathi serials. Reema Lagoo was last seen in filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt's television show Naamkaran, in which, she played a businesswoman Dayavanti Mehta. Another co-actor Barkha Bisht said, "She was one of the lively people on our set".

She was now shooting a TV show Naamkaran by Mahesh Bhatt, in which she broke her nurturing, motherly mould and starred in a negative role for one of the first times. "I had the privilege of directing her.#RIPReemaLagoo", wrote Johar, who directed Lagoo in "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai".

Like her mother, Reema also forayed into Marathi theatre and remained a part of it for nearly four decades. She gained prominence once she started doing mother's roles in Hindi films, the first of such character roles was as the mother of Juhi Chawla in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.

The Congress President in a separate condolence message, mourned the demise of Lagoo and said that the actress had always left a lasting imprint on the viewers. She was considered as the mother-figure in the Bollywood as she really portrayed her roles as a mother with an expertise.
