Amnesty urges donors to give more to South Sudan refugees

This number is much lesser than the year 2014-2015 when at least 5 million people were homeless.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has revealed that number of people displaced from their homes across the world due to war and persecution has climbed to a record 65.6 million previous year.

UNHCR was still there, helping numerous same people now fleeing an internal conflict, he told local government officials in the northern town of Bentiu.

Developing countries are hosting the majority of the world's refugees, UNHCR reported.

Colombia was second with 7.7 million people forcibly displaced and Afghanistan with 4.7 million.

The U.N. Refugee Convention states that a refugee is a person who has fled their home and country because of "a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion".

And that number has ballooned by a further half million people since then, the agency said, stressing the most of the refugees had left since the "disastrous breakdown of peace efforts" last July.

After Turkey, Pakistan hosted the second-largest number of refugees (1.4 million) followed by Lebanon with one million.

Ahead of a United Nations-backed summit here aimed at raising awareness of the refugee crisis, Uganda said it needs Dollars 2 billion to look after the refugees and host communities.

The latest annual global trends study from the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) reports that one person was forced to leave their home every three seconds in 2016.

Injured Sharapova pulls out of Wimbledon, grass circuit
Sharapova received a wild-card entry for the event at Birmingham in June, and she was supposed to enter qualifying for Wimbledon. The news means Sharapova will also withdraw from the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, for which she had been granted a wild card.

The conflict in Syria, now in its seventh year, was the world's biggest producer of refugees (5.5 million).

Monday's report also pointed out that, despite huge focus on Europe's migrant crisis, it is poorer countries that host most of the world's refugees.

"But, Lebanon, another one of the neighboring countries, is the country that has the highest per capita ratio compared to the local population in terms of the number of refugees".

A cross-section of refugees from different countries such as Sri Lanka, Iraq, Sudan and Myanmar, on Saturday took out a rally in Chennai, where they live, to highlight issues concerning the community of refugees.

Among its findings, the report noted that some 75,000 asylum claims were received from children travelling alone or separated from their parents.

This is "the highest figure since we started recording these figures", UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi told reporters ahead of the report launch.

While in Bentiu, the High Commissioner also visited a new site where hundreds of displaced people have been given small plots of land to build more permanent shelters, as well as supply kits that include solar lamps, cooking supplies and soap.

In total, about 3.3 million South Sudanese had fled their homes by the end of the year, in what is known as the fastest-growing displacement of people in the world.

"The world seems to have become unable to make peace", Grandi said. Afghanistan had produced the largest number of refugees for 32 years before conditions worsened in Iraq and Syria.
