Kushner Helped End Diplomatic Crisis Between Israel and Jordan

Jordanian officials have called on Israel to remove metal detectors outside the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. In the days after the Amman shooting, Israeli authorities dismantled their controversial security measures at the Jerusalem site, leading observers to speculate that the speedy return of the Israeli guard and the subsequent concession by Israel were part of diplomatic horse-trading.

Associated Press photos showed a worker dismantling one of the devices at Lions Gate before 02:00 a.m.

The guard's version of events differs from other accounts that suggested the stabbing was motivated by a row over the late delivery of furniture.

In response, Israel installed metal detectors at the site, saying they were a necessary security measure to prevent future attacks. Even the smallest perceived change to delicate arrangements pertaining to the site sparks tensions.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu meets with Ziv (R), the Israeli guard who was stabbed in the Jordan embassy complex earlier this week, and Israel's Ambassador to Jordan Einat Schlein (L), at the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem on July 25, 2017.

Al-Aqsa mosque is considered the third holiest place in Islam, monitoring the movement into and out of the mosque.

Jordan is the Muslim custodian of the site which is also holy to Jews. "We will dedicate all the efforts and resources to ensure that justice takes its course", the king said.

The police statement said the two Jordanians had gone into the building to carry out "carpentry work".

Israeli authorities are working with the Jordanian government over various channels in regards to the incident and are continuing to hold discussions on this matter during the course of the day.

The crisis with Jordan is far from over.

The removal is meant to defuse escalating tensions between Israel and the Muslim world, including key security ally Jordan.

"I was impressed that she is handling the matter in the best way possible", Netanyahu said. It has always been a flashpoint of anti-Israeli protests at times of turmoil in the Palestinian territories.

Three people were initially wounded, the security agency said.

Israeli media reported that high resolution cameras capable of detecting hidden objects would be deployed. When President Rivlin had a phone conversation with Erdoğan last Thursday - over the objections of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which rightly views Erdoğan as anything but helpful - and asked Erdoğan to condemn the terrorist attack on the Israeli policemen, Erdoğan pointedly kept his mouth shut.

Meanwhile, the United Nations' Middle East envoy warned of an escalation if the crisis over the metal detectors was not resolved by the time of Muslim prayers on Friday.

This was one of many slogans chanted on Tuesday by thousands of Jordanians who attended the funeral ceremony for 16-year-old Mohammad Jawawdah, one of two Jordanians killed by an Israeli embassy guard on Sunday. A second Jordanian, the owner of the building, was hit by gunfire and later died of his injuries.
