U.S. President Donald Trump told the Guam governor that "You are safe".
North Korea also accused the United States of devising a "preventive war" and said in another statement that any plans to execute this would be met with an "all-out war wiping out all the strongholds of enemies, including the USA mainland".
- Democratic congressional leaders say the engagement from White House to Congress over North Korea tensions has been minimal - and that's concerning. "The legislative branch of the USA government is hearing about these developments on Twitter at the same time as Kim Jong Un", Ben Marter, a spokesman for the Senate's No. 2 Democrat, Dick Durbin of IL, told CNN.
The call came after Trump unleashed a slew of fresh threats against North Korea on Friday, declaring the USA military "locked and loaded" and warning North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that he "will regret it fast" if he takes any action against US territories or allies.
Unlike past missile launches that landed much closer to North Korean territory, firing a barrage near Guam would be extremely provocative, nearly compelling a response.
In remarks to reporters, Trump issued the threat directly at Kim, who is also known for his bellicose rhetoric, and all but drew a red line that would trigger swift US action.
Trump has pushed China to do more to pressure North Korea to halt its nuclear weapons program.
Despite tensions and talk of war, life on the streets of the North Korean capital remains calm.

"It's very concerning that both Trump and (North Korean leader) Kim Jong Un are more unpredictable than the countries' previous leaders", the newspaper said in an editorial.
Trump has been escalating his rhetoric against North Korea, but says he hopes "it will all work out".
In addition, it would also show that the US' plan in squeezing diplomatic "concessions" from China on North Korea by distracting it with India has been a relative success so far, yielding the tangible dividends that Trump and his team expected all along. State-run media ensures that the population gets the North Korean side of the story, but doesn't convey any sense of global concern about the situation.
As it is, the USA has a robust military presence in the region, including six B-1 bombers in Guam and Air Force fighter jet units in South Korea, plus other assets across the Pacific Ocean and in the skies above. "Fight tonight" has long been the motto of US forces in South Korea to show they're always ready for combat on the Korean Peninsula. "We are with you a thousand percent". "She's certainly not referring to the United States, that I can tell you".
Calvo responded by saying he feels safe and confident with Trump's leadership: "I'm glad you're holding the helm, sir".
North Korea has vowed that the new United Nations sanctions would not stop it from developing its nuclear arsenal, and that it would never negotiate it away. Neither the United States nor North Korea has embraced the plan. Pyongyang says it will be ready to send its missile launch plan to Kim for approval just before or as the drills begin.
Mr Trump said it was time that somebody stood up to the pariah nation.
"We still hope and believe that common sense will prevail."The annual joint US-South Korean military exercise, called Ulchi-Freedom Guardian, is expected to proceed as scheduled starting on August 21, said Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Logan, a Pentagon spokesman".
