Microsoft pushes 'mixed reality' features with Windows 10 update

Some of the features to expect on the new update include enhancing Pen and Inking tools, adding a new 3D Paint system, unveiling the powerful Remix video editing and 3D creation tool, and fully bringing its mixed-reality platform, Windows Holographic to Windows 10.

The logo of the longtime Microsoft franchise appeared in a recent unveiling of all the different properties and companies which are developing for the new augmented reality platform, joining the likes of Ark Park, Arizona Sunshine, Hulu, Skyworld and Sony Pictures. OneDrive Files On-Demand is the long-awaited replacement for the placeholders that were found in Windows 8.1 and removed in Windows 10.

According to Microsoft website, the update will also have "Timeline" feature that will let users "jump back in time to find what they were working on, whether it was two hours or two months ago". With head-mounted displays (HMDs) from OEMs like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and 3Glasses that start at $299 and work with PCs that have integrated graphics, there's a much lower entry point for virtual reality than with competing products from Oculus and HTC. Lenovo has now announced the official name of the device: the Lenovo Explorer. Win10 will also offer "Game Mode", which allows video gamers to devote the full processing power of their computers to what they are playing, as if it was an Xbox game console, the company said. Acer and Dell have holiday bundles planned that include both a headset and a set of controllers.

Books-A-Million will host a special party on Friday from 4-6 p.m. with activities, cosplay events and more. The BB-9E toy ($149) will go on sale midnight Friday, along with a mini robotic version of R2-D2 ($179).

The Fall Creators Update will also be the first release that has any widespread adoption of Microsoft's new Fluent Design System, though the adoption of Fluent will be a journey that spans multiple updates.

Windows Mixed Reality headsets. Its predecessor, Windows 10 Anniversary Update, a k a 1607 for July 2016, didn't begin rolling out until August. Promises easier setup and handling, as it comes with just a headset that you need to plug into the PC. As such, buying one might come down to personal preference.
