PSG hammering ends Ancelotti's reign at Bayern

The end for Carlo Ancelotti at Bayern Munich seemed to come suddenly on Thursday, but his tenure was under threat even before the side's heaviest defeat in the Champions League group stage'.

Bayern president, Uli Hoeness, had revealed that five senior players had seen enough of Ancelotti.

"Our team's performances did not meet our expectations from the start of the season".

They are now third in the Bundesliga, three points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern's hierarchy reportedly view the 30-year-old as a long-term managerial prospect and the Bundesliga champions could ramp up their interest following the dismissal of Ancelotti on Thursday. "The Paris match showed clearly we had to take action".

"I am regretful. Where I am now is thanks to Bayern Munich".

If Ancelotti does depart then assistant Willy Sagnol is likely to take over on a temporary basis, with former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel likely to be at the head of the queue to replace the Italian full-time.

All three players had started Bayern's previous fixture - a 2-2 draw at home to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga - and Ancelotti rang the chances for the Champions League trip to Parc des Princes, starting with Javi Martinez alongside Niklas Sule in central defence and James Rodriguez in attack.

Rummenigge had called for "consequences" at the traditional banquet after the Paris game. "I now expect a positive improvement from the team and a total willingness to perform so that we can reach our objectives for this season".

According to data company Opta, Ancelotti's team conceded 10 goals in its first 10 competitive games this season - its most porous defense since Jurgen Klinsmann's team in 2008.

The former AC Milan, Real Madrid, Chelsea and PSG coach took over from Pep Guardiola in 2016 and under his tutelage, Bayern dominated the Bundesliga, winning the title by a margin of 15 points over second-placed RB Leipzig.
