United States calls on UN to support Myanmar

Successive governments in the predominantly Buddhist country have denied the Rohingya basic rights and citizenship, deeming majority to be foreign invaders from Bangladesh, even though Rohingya have lived in Myanmar, also known as Burma, for generations. About 1.1 million Rohingya live in apartheid-like conditions in northern Rakhine.
They allege massacres of Rohingya led by Myanmar security forces and ethnic Rakhine Buddhist mobs.

Fortify Rights, an NGO with a focus on Myanmar, said eyewitnesses alleged mobs shot and hacked down Rohingya villagers - including children - in a five-hour "killing spree" in the village of Chut Pyin in Rathedaung township on Sunday afternoon.
Bangladesh, which is already host to more than 400,000 Rohingya said it will not accept any more refugees, despite an appeal by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for Dhaka to allow Rohingya to seek safety.
"They didn't know how to swim, so they died", Saddique said.
Some Buddhists and Hindus have also fled the violence.
The patients, mostly children and women, come with fever, cold, diarrhoea, minor cuts and scrapes and skin diseases, he added.

Lee decried the failure of authorities in Myanmar to help Rohingya Muslims evacuate to safer locations.
The bodies washed up on Thursday were hardly the first Rohingya to perish trying to escape by boat from Myanmar.
"The police arrested 71 Rohingya from inside Bangladesh and later on handed them to us", said Manzurul Hassan Khan.
In 2012, 10 Rohingya men were killed after three Rohingya were accused of raping and murdering a Buddhist woman. New Delhi also made it clear that its security forces carried out operations in 2015 "along the border" with Myanmar thereby seeking to avoid any controversy in the wake of reports at the time that the surgical strike by the Indian Army had been carried out against terrorists in Myanmar that year.
