"The French defender was injured in his right knee during the first half by beating Crystal Palace with a clean five-point Premier League", said the statement published by Manchester City. The £49million summer signing from Monaco has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, likely keeping the France global out for most of the season in his first year in English football.
The Manchester City left-back underwent successful surgery in Barcelona on Thursday after sustaining anterior cruciate ligament damage last weekend against Crystal Palace - the same heartbreak which brought a cruel end to Gundogan's first season at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City have confirmed that new £52million signing Benjamin Mendy has ruptured the cruciate ligament in his right knee.
"We wish him a speedy recovery and we support him in every way".

He wrote, "Bad news guys".
However, City's coach Pep Guardiola suggested on Monday that Mendy still had a chance of featuring in the midweek Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk, but the defender was actually pictured on crutches at the game.
The Spaniard was asked whether he would consider looking for a replacement left-back in January and replied: "We will see in January".
"We have alternatives in our squad - Danilo, Fabian Delph, Fernandinho, can play there - so we will see as we go along".
