Ex-Michigan coach Jedd Fisch named interim head coach at UCLA

On Sunday, the day after a rivalry loss to USC, UCLA announced that it has relieved head football coach Jim Mora of his duties near the end of his sixth season.

"Jim helped re-establish our football program, and was instrumental in so many ways in moving the program forward", Guerrero said in a statement.

Mora, who turned 56 on Sunday, went 46-30 in six seasons with the Bruins.

The terms of Mora's contract will be honored by UCLA Athletics, exclusively using department-generated funds.

Every UCLA Head Football Coach has managed a double-digit winning season, besides Rick Neuheisel, since Terry Donahue took over in 1976 but the Bruins haven't been ranked number 1 since 1954.

"While his first four seasons at UCLA were very successful, the past two seasons have not met expectations, Guerrero said in the press release". Under Mora, Bruin teams produced four of the top five best total offensive season outputs in school history.

UCLA has also announced that former National Football League quarterback Troy Aikman will be assisting in the school's upcoming search.

Mora started his career with the most wins in his first three seasons for any UCLA head coach, but went just 17-19 since the beginning of 2015.

Mora coached the Falcons from 2004-06.

But UCLA has fallen on hard times the past two years, going 4-8 last year and 5-6 thus far this season after Saturday's 28-23 loss to rival USC. The defense has let down the Bruins this season, with particularly terrible run defense under veteran coordinator Tom Bradley and Mora, a longtime defensive coach. In 2013 and 2014, the Bruins tied a season record with 10 victories, capping each year with a bowl win.
