Sauber reveals Alfa Romeo livery design

Giovinazzi's chances seemed to have been raised by news of the Alfa Romeo deal, with speculation Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne was keen to make it a fully-fledged junior team.

Formula Two champion Charles Leclerc will graduate to F1 with Sauber next season.

Ericsson retains his seat despite failing to score a point in 2017. During the event, a previous generation F1 auto was unveiled featuring a red and white livery and a prominent Alfa Romeo badge (above, with Leclerc and Ericsson).

"So it's a great pleasure announcing Charles Leclerc and Marcus Ericsson will be our official drivers", said Marchionne, administrator for Fiat who own Alfa Romeo and Ferrari.

Sauber will have closer ties with Ferrari next season through the deal with Alfa Romeo. "I think the guns are loaded in a different way".

In a speech, Marchionne also thanked Sauber Holding chairman Pascal Picci and Swedish billionaire Finn Rausing for their support in reaching a deal that should boost a team that finished last overall this year.

"I think obviously we're starting from quite far behind because we had a hard season, but I think we have the potential to take a good step forward".

With Sauber teaming up with Alfa Romeo ahead of the 2018 championship, Leclerc was widely tipped to take one of the two Sauber race-seats.

"I am very happy to be entering Formula 1 in 2018", said Leclerc.
