Steve Mnuchin got something much worse than coal for Christmas

The package - which contained horse manure - was dropped off at a neighbor's house.

A bit of horseplay forced the hand of a Los Angeles bomb squad Saturday night after a suspicious Christmas gift-wrapped package was found on the doorstep of the Bel-Air home of Steve Mnuchin. The package was found Saturday night, December 23, in the tony Bel Air neighborhood after it was dropped off at a neighbor's house.

According to CNN affiliate ABC7, the package was from "the American people".

The LAPD bomb squad responded to the home after a neighbor reported seeing a package wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper left on the Mnuchin's driveway.

Authorities searched the residence and did not find anyone inside, officials said, and the fire has been put out. The occupants of the house were not home, but neighbors said their small dog died.

Police cleared the scene and said the investigation has been handed over to the U.S. Secret Service. A Secret Service spokesman said the agency was aware of the incident but declined to comment further.

Someone in the neighborhood reportedly received a suspicious package addressed to Mnuchin, according to the LAPD. Authorities said that no one was evacuated from the area at any point.

The Bel Air neighborhood is filled with multimillion-dollar mansions and is home to many celebrities.
