Texas governor orders investigation into sexual assault allegations of gymnastic facility

As Dvora Meyers reported on Deadspin in May, USA Gymnastics brought Bela Karolyi out of retirement in late 1999 to fill the new role of national team coordinator, and grueling training camps at the ranch became part of the Olympic team selection process.

Kerry Perry, USA Gymnastics president and CEO, said it was her intent to have the women's program leave the ranch when she began her tenure in December.

Several gymnasts have made claims that they were abused at the facility, which is located in Walker County, Texas, by Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics doctor.

He also said the athletes who trained at the ranch "deserve to know that no stone is left unturned". She said he would give her desserts as treats, which were forbidden at the ranch, where the Karolyis closely monitored what the gymnasts ate.

Additional reporting from Newsy affiliate CNN. Nassar was recently sentenced to up to 175 years in prison by a MI judge after he admitted to sexually abusing team members under the guise of treatment. The Walker County Sheriff's Office is also now investigating the matter.

Nassar has admitted to using his position as a trusted doctor for U.S. Gymnastics and when he worked for the Michigan State University sports department to gain access to and assault women under the guise of providing medical attention.

Governor of Texas Greg Abbott on Tuesday ordered investigation into sexual assault allegations at a gymnastic facility in the state.

"I was willing to physically hurt myself to get out of the abuse I was experiencing at the ranch", she said.

"The Ranger's reputation as the state's preeminent law enforcement agency is well known, and I have no ddoubt that they, together with the Walker County Sheriff's Office, will provide the resources and expertise needed for a successful investigation", said Abbott.

Mr. Abbott said that because criminal action might have involved multiple jurisdictions, "it is essential that the Texas Rangers work with the Walker County Sheriff's Office to comprehensively investigate all potential criminal conduct". Victims blamed Michigan State, USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee for not doing more to stop him earlier.
