Spotify Seemingly Working To Create Its First Hardware

These are not the first job listings suggestive of a coming hardware product, either. Moving into the hardware field could provide Spotify with a route into a more profitable operating model.

Earlier previous year, Spotify posted a job listing on its website that sought a Senior Product Manager for hardware, indicating the company's intention to expand into the hardware segment.

Prior job listings indicated that Spotify intends to create a "category-defining" product similar to the soon-to-be-defunct Pebble Watch, Amazon Echo, and the aforementioned Spectacles, and hinted at the integration of voice controls.

Smart speakers are one of the new frontiers in consumer technology, and Spotify might be working its own.

Today, a trio of job adverts (spotted by industry site MusicAlly) have been posted, seeking an "operations manager", "senior project manager: hardware production", and "project manager: hardware production and engineering" for the hardware. These roles will have a hand in making innovative Spotify experiences via connected hardware, according to the listings. There is now one Spotify-focused third-party product on the market. Apple's recent entry HomePod notably omitted Spotify functionality, and the biggest speakers on the market are created by Amazon and Google - both of whom have their own streaming services and music stores.

While it's entirely unsurprising that the HomePod supports only Apple Music natively, the lack of Spotify support other than via AirPlay was a contentious point for some.

What about wireless headphones? While details are scant on how many products Spotify's creating, it seems most probable that it will first debut a connected smart speaker.

Spotify is the most famous service for music streaming and one of the biggest databases of music ever seen.
