Georgia Teacher Fired Gun While Barricaded in Classroom, Police Say

A social studies high school teacher from Dalton, Georgia has been arrested after he allegedly firing at least one shot inside a classroom on Wednesday.

A school teacher locked his students in the hallway and fired a shot when the principal opened the door Dalton High School on Wednesday, according to U.S. media reports.

Dalton Police released two reports Wednesday night after Davidson reportedly barricaded himself in a room at Dalton High School and fired a gun.

Social studies teacher Jesse Randal Davidson, 53, was arrested after a standoff of about 30 to 45 minutes.

Davidson is also passionate about the Dalton High Catamounts football team, a sometimes-national powerhouse with a storied history in Georgia sports.

Another student, Chondi Chastain, described him as her "favorite teacher" in a tweet about the shooting incident, but added: "We had to run out the back of the school in the rain".

Davidson faces several charges, including reckless conduct and bringing a gun on school grounds.

The school resource officer on duty was at the nearby middle school when the episode began, Chief Cason said.

Davidson said he agreed.

"It's our basic student right to feel safe at school and if (teachers were armed), I wouldn't feel safe".

A student at the school told NBC News in a phone interview that she was terrified.

There were no major injuries reported as a result of the incident and the suspect has since been taken into police custody.

In its report of the Georgia incident, CNN pointed out that critics say arming teachers could create a host of other risky side effects.

In March of 2016, he tried to confess to having someone killed.
