London homes told to limit water use as supply problems continue

A spokesperson for Thames Water said: "We are really sorry to all those customers who are now without water".

"We are working as quickly as is safely possible to resolve issues as they occur". The company has seen a almost 4,000 per cent increase in burst pipe alarms.

People across the United Kingdom are being urged to use as little water as possible after thawing temperatures cause pipes to burst.

Steve said: "We are asking people to look in their attics, airing cupboards, under their sinks and to check the taps out in their gardens to see if they have got any unnoticed leaks which could be a trickle at the moment but later will cause major damage".

While Severn Trent water says it is also returning water pressure to normal this morning, Welsh water customers are suffering similar problems.

Four companies - Thames Water, South East Water, Southern Water and Affinity Water - issued a joint statement urging customers to use running water only where essential.

Thames Water has faced criticism for resorting to handing out bottled water to customers, after up to 20,000 properties in London and the Thames valley were left without water.

At a supermarket in Balham, south London, Thames Water employees distributed crates of bottled water to a waiting queue of people, while in Hampstead to the north of the capital, they ferried crates to residential streets in their own cars.

Thames water also asked its customers to cut usage until leaks could be fixed and pipes were refilled.

It is possible to claim compensation for a number of problems including extended periods of time spent without water, multiple periods of low water pressure, complaints not being dealt with in a certain time frame and appointments not being kept.
