With all four franchise player spots having been filled, LA Galaxy could not exceed a €3.2m (£2.8m) wage limit, which meant that they could only afford to spend €1.2m on the Swede.
A full-page advert in Friday's LA Times newspaper showed Ibrahimovic wearing the white Galaxy kit, with a message from the 36-year-old Swedish striker saying "Dear Los Angeles, you're welcome".
"I wanted people to enjoy my game there and to win, and I chose the Galaxy to do that".
After a terrific debut season with United, the 36-year-old has struggled this term with injuries and hadn't featured for Jose Mourinho's side since Boxing Day.
The former Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona and Paris St Germain forward becomes the latest star to export his talents from Europe to the west coast of the United States.
In a statement on Thursday, United said Ibrahimovic would leave the club with their blessing. "We are confident that Zlatan can be one of the most risky strikers in our league, and we are excited to integrate him into our club".

Helsel shared pictures of the river rocks that have been collected in buckets for the classrooms. He also added that throwing small rocks is just one small part of the district's security plan.
Ibrahimovic's move also should energize the Galaxy, who will mix him into coach Sigi Schmid's intriguing collection of global talent.
"As one of the winningest players of all time, we believe he'll have a very positive impact on our team", Schmid said after Ibrahimovic signed. "We are confident that Zlatan can be one of the most unsafe strikers in our league and we are excited to integrate him into our club".
The Galaxy have a history of luring ageing stars to America with Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane among those to have made the move to Los Angeles. The Galaxy changed the North American league's global perception when David Beckham joined the club in a groundbreaking move in 2007.
Ibrahimovic's first action for Galaxy could even come against city rivals Los Angeles Football Club on March 31.
"First United, now MLS".
'I'm just looking forward to playing, I need to play.
The Swede could wait to make his first start against Los Angeles next month in what is the MLS' newest derby.
