Ford F-150 diesel EPA-rated at 30 mpg highway

Diesel engines are heating up in the full-size truck market and Ford is throwing its hat into the ring with the 2018 F-150 rocking a 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel.

In the modern era of the half-ton pickup, never before has a truck achieved 30 miles per gallon, so in addition to leading the segment right now, this is effectively the most fuel efficient full-sized truck to date.

The engine is not the only one responsible for the fuel economy ratings, with the F-150 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel also benefitting from a lightweight aluminum-alloy body and a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.

"Even a few years ago, customers wouldn't have imagined an EPA-estimated rating of 30 mpg highway would be possible in a full-size pickup, but our team of crazy-smart engineers rose to the challenge", Hau Thai-Tang, Ford's executive vice president for product development and purchasing, said in a statement. The power-stroke diesel will produce 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque at a low 1750 rpm. It also will have best-in-class payload capacity among diesel offerings: 2,020 pounds for XL and XLT fleet applications and 1,940 pounds for retail applications. The manufacturers of the respectively and perennial second- and third-best-selling Chevy Silverado and RAM pickup trucks in the US announced new pickup powertrains in January. This diesel was created to haul that boat, camper, or horse-trailer through the toughest of conditions without any loss of power, even at high altitudes.

The 2019 RAM 1500's carryover 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 adds eTorque, a 48-volt mild hybrid. (5,171 kg) of towing capability and as much as 2,020 lbs.

Chevy is going after the diesel market with a 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel inline-six for the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado. A 4×4 F-150 diesel comes in at a much lower 20/25/22. High fuel economy, historically the most compelling factor for diesel auto owners, hasn't been as big a pull for truck owners.

The F-150 with the Power-Stroke diesel should start to arrive at your local dealers by May.
