Kim Jong Un meets South Korean president in historic summit

President Trump revealed Pompeo, when he was Central Intelligence Agency director, quietly traveled to North Korea in an effort to set up a meeting between the USA president and communist dictator.

The rapprochement began in January when Mr Kim suggested he was "open to dialogue" with South Korea.

It is very unlikely that Kim is ready to give up his nuclear weapons — the benchmark for any real breakthrough on the Korean Peninsula. "He will do an excellent job helping @POTUS lead our efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula".

A representative of the North Korean mission to the United Nations in NY was not immediately available to comment.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump exchanged insults and threats of nuclear annihilation.

Duyeon Kim, visiting senior fellow at the Korean Peninsula Future Forum, said: "The problem has always been the two Koreas have never been able to fully implement their past agreements that agree on peace and establishing peace". This summit will set up the highly anticipated third act, a summit between Kim and Trump, now slated for June. Afterward, Moon and Kim will take a stroll together in Panmunjom before beginning the next round of talks.

As a conscript in the South's special forces, Moon was part of the joint mission with the United States to remove the tree in a show of force three days after the attack, though he was not on the scene.

He will arrive by vehicle then walk to the meeting point on foot, crossing the border not far from where a North Korean defector was shot multiple times by North Korean troops as he escaped, just five months ago.

One possible "get" could be if North Korea offers to freeze its weapons as a first step toward denuclearization, according to Robert Manning, a former State Department official, and James Przystup, with the National Defense University's Institute for National Strategic Studies.

At the summit, the two leaders will address North Korea's controversial nuclear weapons programme.

Impoverished North Korea and the rich, democratic South are technically still at war because the Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

Kim and Mr Moon will meet in a conference room on the second floor of Peace House at a newly-designed oval-shaped table with legs to resemble two bridges merging. (Reuters/Jorge Silva) People wave the Korean unification flag during the summit near the DMZ separating the two Koreas, in Paju, South Korea. However, the revival of past inter-Korean economic cooperation, including large-scale projects, such as the Kaesong Industrial Zone and the Mount Kumgang tourism project, has been blocked by UN Security Council resolutions and will remain off limits until there is tangible evidence of North Korea's commitment to denuclearization.

"I'm saying to myself 'wait a minute, all of these things he's given up and we haven't even really that much asked them,"' Trump said. The North ignores Moon's proposal for talks on military and humanitarian issues for months. Many Koreans think terminating the war is long overdue.

How Historic Will the Summit Be? Eventually, to the relief of many USA officials who saw nuclear arsenals as the principal deterrent to a U.S. Mr Moon will meet Mr Kim and his delegation of nine officials at the concrete blocks which mark the demarcation line on the border, Mr Im told reporters on Thursday.

Analysts repeatedly told us during the era of U.S.

Leading up to the U.S. The outcome will depend not only on how the well the game is played, but more importantly, on who is writing the script.
