Popovich waiting on Leonard´s own team of doctors for clearance

Just a couple weeks ago, a report surfaced that Kawhi Leonard's return to the San Antonio Spurs lineup was imminent.

Leonard, 26, is now in NY to rehab his injured leg, and the Spurs have reportedly "grown pessimistic" that the former NBA Finals MVP will still suit up for the team this season, according to CBS Sports' Colin Ward-Henninger.

The former NBA Most Improved Player then continued that the Celtics could offer Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum plus Al Horford, Marcus Smart, and Terry Rozier to the Spurs to get Leonard.

This is the second time this season Leonard has travelled to NY.

The big question for the Spurs - and their fans - isn't whether Kawhi Leonard is going to return this season.

Time is running out on Leonard's chances of returning to the active roster this season, and optimism has waned that Leonard will play in any of the Spurs' six remaining regular-season games or join them in the Western Conference playoffs.

Added up, the playoffs are about to commence and San Antonio has no clue whether it will have the services of the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Same kind of injury, but mine was 100 times worse. He is averaging 16.2 points and 4.7 rebounds. "You just try to stay positive". Several players quizzed him about the injury situation and the next day, veteran guard Manu Ginobili told reporters, "he is not coming back".

Parker, meanwhile, has recovered from a ruptured left quadriceps tendon suffered last May, making his season debut in November after 208 days. "When he and his group feel he's ready, he'll be ready". Leonard has been cleared by team doctors for some time.

Leonard's use of outside doctors reportedly irritated the Spurs and has prompted speculation regarding Leonard's long-term future with the club.

Ward-Henninger also said that head coach Gregg Popovich had implied "a lack of communication" between the Spurs and Leonard's "group" regarding the current status of his injury.

"It's the same as a player who is the 13th man sitting on the end of the bench", Popovich said.
