Charged With Rape, Weinstein Posts $1 Million Bail and Surrenders Passport

The accusations, first reported previous year by the New York Times and the New Yorker, gave rise to the #MeToo movement, in which hundreds of women have publicly accused powerful men in business, government and entertainment of sexual misconduct.

Weinstein has consistently denied any allegations of nonconsensual sex. He is now out on bail, wearing a monitoring device. Weinstein turned himself in to the New York Police Department and was charged with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse, and sexual misconduct for incidents involving two separate women.

He arrived at the police station in lower Manhattan at 07:30 (12:30 BST) on Friday, carrying three books. NYPD spokesman Eugene White said he'll be in the 1st Precinct, where he will be processed, for about an hour, before being taken to Manhattan Supreme Court to face a judge.

Attorney Benjamin Brafman says Weinstein vehemently denies the charges and will fight to get them dismissed. In a press conference on the steps of the courthouse, Brafman said they are planning to enter a not guilty plea. "We believe that they are constitutionally flawed". We believe that they are not factually supported by the evidence, and we believe that, by the end of the process, Mr. Weinstein will be exonerated.

The New York police said in its statement: "The NYPD thanks these fearless survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice". According to the Associated Press, more than 75 women have accused Weinstein of wrongdoing, including actress and activist Rose McGowan, who said Weinstein raped her in 1997, and Sopranos actress Annabella Sciorra, who said he raped her in her NY apartment in 1992.

Weinstein was charged with rape and a criminal sex act, both felonies.

"You sorry, Harvey?" the media shouted as Weinstein walked into the courthouse earlier today.

In order to extract information Rose McGowan, who eventually publicly accused Weinstein of rape, two ex-Mossad agents hired by Weinsten met with the actress. I wish it were true, and you know, I think if we can get the rotten apples, get rid of them then great people can come up and flourish. The claims destroyed his career and set off a national reckoning over sexual misconduct known as the #MeToo movement.

Harvey Weinstein, once a beloved and respected executive, now a disgraced figure in Hollywood, will turn himself into police.

The disgraced film producer turned himself into NYPD's 1st Precinct, where he was reportedly booked for arraignment.

A second was Richard Schickel's biography of filmmaker Elia Kazan.

Weinstein stands accused by more than 70 women of sexual misconduct, including rape, with some of the accusations going back decades. That's the most disgusting part of it, and that's why he's been able to do this for so long to so many women: "people give up, and then they feel like it's their fault". "We are relieved and grateful that justice is coming, but we also mourn the cases where it didn't", her lawyer, Carrie Goldberg, said in a statement to The Associated Press. Some have alleged rape. She was among the first women to speak out about the producer.

Deponent further states that he is informed by a second person known to the District Attorney's Office that on March 18, 2013, in the morning hours at 569 Lexington Avenue, in the County and State of NY, defendant kept informant physically against her will in a room and engaged in sexual intercourse with informant by forcible compulsion, to wit, defendant penetrated informant's vagina with his penis and, at the time of the incident informant had clearly expressed her lack of consent to the act. Investigators decided not to charge him even though there was an audiotape of Mr Weinstein accepting he had touched Ms Battilana's breasts and pledging not to do so again.

Mr. Weinstein has always maintained that any sexual activity he engaged in was consensual. Former employees from Weinstein's film enterprises worked for the producer, placing intimidating calls to some of those who could jeopardize the Hollywood mogul.
