Once the Mets' ace, Matt Harvey will be designated for assignment

The long and turbulent marriage between Matt Harvey and the New York Mets has finally ended.

Harvey declined, leaving Alderson only one option to offload the pitcher he owes $5.6 million this season.

He has an 0-2 record this season with an ERA of 7.00 in eight games (four starts).

Harvey is eligible for free agency at the end of this season. His most recent innings have been especially bad, and from the bullpen - a benchmark moment on Harvey's sad timeline.

Matt Harvey throws during a spring training game in 2016. After a poor performance out of the bullpen against the San Diego Padres last week, Harvey admitted that he had a hard time mentally preparing to come in out of the pen.

Harvey will now go through the waivers process before being traded or, presumably, released.

While the Major League Baseball rumors surrounding Matt Harvey are growing already, there is no indication that the New York Yankees are interested, or any other team for that matter. After a fantastic debut for the team, Harvey underwent Tommy John surgery and returned stronger than ever in 2015, leading the team to a World Series.
