Comcast Xfinity Mobile will throttle your hotspot speeds and lower video resolution

Comcast a year ago began selling mobile plans with data, voice, and texting. First, it will start holding back video quality to 480p for both its pay per GB and unlimited plans. Comcast will provide a paid option later this year that will allow you reenable 720p resolution streaming. Those changes bring Xfinity Mobile's unlimited plans in line with the rest of the big competitors, which include similar restrictions, and there's now much less of a reason to jump ship to Xfinity Mobile.

The change in tethering speeds will slow connections down to about 600Kbps. Subscribers of the service are now getting emails from Comcast informing them about the changes, and they have to do with video streaming and mobile hotspot speeds.

Comcast made the announcement in a statement to its Xfinity Mobile customers.

Comcast is making some changes to their Xfinity Mobile wireless connection plan. "By the Gig" subscribers will still get 4G speeds with their hotspot.

720p streaming will soon be offered for an extra fee, but until then, it can be requested free of charge.

Thon Maker Involved in Massive FIBA Brawl
Players from both teams engaged in an all-in brawl while officials charged onto the court to try and restore order. Senators stand by Gilas Pilipinas after a brawl with Australia during a FIBA qualifier match on July 2.

Comcast suggests that this change is created to ensure lower pricing point and to help its subscribers conserve data.

If you're an Xfinity Mobile customer, what do you think about these changes? However, Xfinity Mobile announced it is "setting personal hotspotting at 3G speeds for all Unlimited customers, which will allow customers to continue to do numerous things they enjoy doing online". The company says this will allow those paying "By the Gig" to save money, as well as keeping those on the unlimited plan further from the 20GB threshold after which the speed is throttled.

Once again, Comcast spins this as helping you to "conserve data so that it takes longer to reach the 20 GB threshold".

"We're setting personal hotspotting at 3G speeds for all Unlimited customers, which will allow customers to continue to do numerous things they enjoy doing online". It's all the Verizon speed and coverage you could want but through Comcast! The By the Gig data option will continue to deliver 4G speeds for all data traffic.
