Leak detected aboard space station, but NASA says astronauts are safe

The crew aboard the ISS consists of NASA astronauts Drew Feustel, Ricky Arnold, and Serena Aunon, Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency, and two Russian cosmonauts - Oleg Artemyev and Sergei Prokopyev. As the pressure loss was very small and the six astronauts from Russia, USA and Germany are in no danger they were allowed sleep as normal. Flight controllers will monitor the pressure trends overnight. With the assistance of ground control, the crew combed through the ISS, closing off modules one at a time.

A leak on the space station could come from a seal or valve failing, said John Crassidis, an aerospace engineer at the University at Buffalo.

The ISS crew reports that the leak originated from a hole measuring only about 2mm across located on the upper section of the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft.

Using the standard procedure for a leak, the crew put duct tape on the hole to keep more air from escaping into space.

"Throughout the day, the crew was never in any danger, and was told no further action was contemplated for the remainder of the day".

The International Space Station's cabin pressure is holding steady after crews repaired a leak on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft attached to the orbital complex, Russia's space agency said Friday.

Well one astronaut has done one better and stopped a leak in the International Space Station with his finger. The capsule will also have to bring them back home in December. This is a section of the Soyuz that does not return to Earth.

As reported, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said that the return flight of "Soyuz-MS", scheduled for early next year, "will complete the implementation of our obligations under a contract with NASA".

Both natural micrometeoroids (bits of rock left over from the formation of our solar system) and space debris (small pieces of spacecraft that still orbit Earth) are travelling at incredible speeds through space.
