Two Pilots Die In Ukrainian Fighter Jet Crash, U.S. Pilot 'Involved'

An American pilot died when a Ukrainian air force plane went down during a training exercise on October 16, officials said.

U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) confirmed that an American military service member was aboard the Ukrainian Air Force SU-27 that crashed.

The National Police of Vinnytsya Oblast have already started an investigation at the crash scene.

The crash took place during joint military training between the US military and Ukrainian counterparts, known as Clear Sky 2018.

According to the Ukrainian Military Portal, the accident took place during the multinational military exercise titled "Clear Sky-2018".

"We have seen reports claiming a United States casualty and can confirm a U.S. service member was involved in this incident", the release said. "We will provide more information as soon as it becomes available".

A Ukrainian Sukhoi SU-27B went down in the Khmelnytskyi region, killing both the pilot and co-pilot, the Ukrainian military's general staff announced on Tuesday.

Details of the plane crash, including the cause, are not clear. The exercises, called Clear Sky-2018, include members of the California's National Guard's Fresno-based 144th Fighter Wing group, according to a Facebook post.

Training during the exercise was scheduled to include air sovereignty, air interdiction, air-to-ground integration, air-mobility operations, aeromedical evacuation, cyber defense and personnel recovery.
