Joe Theismann described Alex Smith's injury as "heart-wrenching" after watching the Redskins quarterback suffered a broken fibula and tibia 33 years to the day from Theismann's own career-ending injury. That occurred during a Thanksgiving Day game versus the New England Patriots on November 22, 2012; six years later to the day, he'll suit up for Washington for the first time when the Redskins play at Dallas.
California wildfires turn deadly as thousands evacuate homes
Evacuation orders included the entire city of Malibu, which is home to 13,000, among them some of Hollywood's biggest stars. Sheriff deputies continue to search for bodies under the rubble and are fielding 35 official missing persons reports.
Smith was carted off in the third quarter after being sacked by J.J. Watt and Kareem Jackson. The failed Jets QB was apparently at the top of the list, due to his familiarity with some members of the Redskins' coaching staff. Washington's passing game coordinator Kevin O'Connell is also familiar with Sanchez and that's because he backed him up for two seasons in NY.
The Washington Redskins reportedly brought in Sanchez along with Kellen Clemens, T.J. Yates, EJ Manuel and Josh Johnson. An injury cost him the entire 2013 season, and the Jets cut him prior to the 2014 season.
The Sanchez signing will come at nearly the exact six-year anniversary of the Butt Fumble Game, which took place on the night of Thanksgiving in 2012. Washington will travel to play the Dallas Cowboys for Thanksgiving.
