Humanity under threat from antibiotic-resistant infections

Pfizer Pakistan recognition of World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW), 12-18 November 2018, reaffirms its commitment to working with industry partners and policymakers to help prevent and combat the global public health threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned of the unsafe increase in antibiotic consumption in some countries, but also of low use in other regions, which can lead to the emergence of deadly antibiotic-resistant bacteria, commonly dubbed superbugs.
Mr Agyeman-Manu said the major cause of resistance had been attributed to irresponsible use including incorrect medical indications, inappropriate self-medication, non-adherence to therapy, over-the-counter sale of antibiotics from unlicensed pharmacies and unapproved outlets and inappropriate use in animals across all sectors.
"Access" category represents more than 50% of antibiotic consumption. Therefore, when microbes develop drug resistance in animals, they can easily go on to affect humans, making it hard to treat diseases and infections.
