Senate leaders preserve posts; McCarthy will get high Home GOP place

In the letter announcing his bid for minority leader, McCarthy wrote that House Republicans "need to lay the groundwork to regain the majority so that we can continue working alongside President Trump to fulfill our promise to fundamentally change Washington".
McCarthy is now the House Majority Leader, the No. 2 position under House Speaker Paul Ryan, who is retiring at the end of the year.

Democrat Katie Porter captured a Republican-held U.S. House seat Thursday in the heart of what once was Southern California's Reagan country, extending a rout of the state's GOP House delegation that might not be over.

Porter also bucked the California Democratic Party by declaring her intention to vote for a ballot initiative repealing a modest gas tax levied by the Democratic-run state government to fund infrastructure improvements.
Through their victory in the House, the Democrats now have effective veto power over the Trump administration's legislative initiatives.
In his race for minority leader, McCarthy positioned himself as a close ally of Trump.
Mr Trump alleged that some fraudsters were changing their hats or shirts and coming back to vote a couple of times, although Republican election officials in Florida said that they had seen no evidence of this. But since his election, he has changed course, saying instead the money must come from Congress and USA taxpayers.
