No talk of solution to shutdown, Trump tweets blame

Between Democrats and Republicans have disagreements.

Lindsey Graham told reporters that President Donald Trump is open to a compromise with Democrats that includes $5 billion for border security "in areas that make sense" in exchange for legislative changes to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program and immigrants with temporary protected status, or TPS.

He believes that the problems of migrants, and death on the border will stop, if Congress will allocate money for the construction of the wall.

The Democrats are refusing to provide billions for Trump's border wall project and the president insists he will not fully fund the government unless he gets the money.

There has been little direct contact between the sides during the stalemate, and Mr Trump did not ask Republicans, who hold a monopoly on power in Washington until January 3, to keep Congress in session.

"There may be a wall in some places, there may be steel slats, there may be technological enhancements", Conway said.

He added that Democrats had previously rejected the deal and President Donald Trump "is not going to walk away from this fight" without funding for border security, adding he was "not asking anybody to do something new" but rather "rearrange the deal that was offered before".

In another portion of the interview, Kelly blamed then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions for the policy to separate families at the border, which caught the White House by surprise. Trump has faced mounting conservative criticism for his inability to deliver on his core campaign promise.

To end the government shutdown, Trump could agree to sign some version of a spending bill passed before the Christmas holiday by the Republicans in the Senate. "They may have the 10 Senate votes, but we have the issue, Border Security".

Trump and Xi agreed to a ceasefire in the trade war, deciding to hold off on imposing more tariffs for 90 days starting December 1 while they negotiate a deal to end the dispute following months of escalating tensions.

He was accused of "reaching new lows" after blaming the opposition party for the deaths of the two Guatemalan children, claiming they were "strictly the fault of the Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies that allow people to make the long trek thinking they can enter our country illegally".

Trump said on Twitter that both children who died "were very sick before they were given over to Border Patrol".

Trump is firing off Twitter taunts, after canceling his planned Florida vacation over the impasse.

Mr Trump made the idea of a solid wall on the border a key pledge from the start of his presidential campaign in 2015. Now we have to do it the hard way, with a Shutdown.

The Times noted that from his time heading Homeland Security in 2017, Kelly valued input from "people who actually secure the border", the Customs and Border Protection agents on the ground. "Meanwhile, the president tweets blaming everyone but himself for a shutdown he called for more than 25 times".

Groups representing federal employees said Trump's freeze comes as added insult with some 800,000 federal employees furloughed or working without pay as the shutdown looks set to continue into the new year.

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi, said she had returned from Hawaii to her home in San Francisco late last week and plans to return to Washington on Monday as she prepares to be sworn in for her 17th term and lead the new House Democratic majority.
