Much of the information about Kilimnik was redacted in the filing, although Manafort admitted he conspired with Kilimnik to obstruct justice.
In a joint-status report filed by Mueller, Andrew Weissmann and Greg Andres, along with Gates' attorney Thomas Green, the parties agreed to provide an update within 60 days - "no later than March, 15, 2019".
Multiple reports suggest that the special counsel's investigation may be preparing to wrap up soon - though no one knows for sure.
Whatever useful information Gates is providing will ultimately factor into the sentence that federal prosecutors recommend for the former Trump campaign adviser.
Recent developments, including the preparation of a final report and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's expected impending departure, have led to speculation that the probe could be coming to an end.
Rick Gates, a former senior campaign aide to President Donald Trump, will have to wait at least another two months for his sentencing date in the Russian Federation investigation, prosecutors said Tuesday.
A heavily redacted portion of the document also laid out details about Manafort's relationship with Kilimnik.
Sen. Bernie Sanders' top 2016 campaign adviser accused of sexual misconduct
Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Thursday apologized to women who allege they were sexually harassed while working on his 2016 presidential campaign.
Kilimnik's plan - which he claimed at the time Manafort was not involved with - recommended bringing disgraced former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych back from exile in Russian Federation to the country that overthrew him in a deadly revolution to be the head of the war-torn eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
An affidavit filed on Tuesday gives an in-depth look at special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election interference, and revealed that Konstantin Kilimnik, a suspected member of Russian intelligence, was a central figure in the investigation. But the public has slowly learned the details of Manafort's cooperation with prosecutors since November, when Mueller first accused Manafort of lying to investigators in violation of his plea deal. Russians backed by a powerful oligarch also at that time allegedly ran a propaganda campaign on American social media sites to influence voters in a way that would help Trump.
Cohen also revealed Trump spoke with him more extensively during the presidential campaign about the proposed Trump Tower project in Moscow than Cohen admitted to Congress a year ago.
The allegations, if confirmed, would mean that Trump's campaign chief was working on a plan to settle Russia's conflict with Ukraine on terms favourable for the Kremlin while the Russian government was interfering in the 2016 United States election to help Trump.
Unlike Gates, Manafort's case is now moving toward sentencing.
According to the court filing, between August 2, 2016 and March 2018, Manafort and Kilimnik communicated about an issue that is redacted in the filing.
