(NFLX.O) stepped into Hollywood's brightest spotlight for the first time Tuesday as its film "Roma" received an Academy Award nomination for best picture. Roma and The Favourite, meanwhile, lead the way with 10 nominations apiece, with both picking up Best Director (for Alfonso Cuaron and Yorgos Lanthimos respectively) and some acting nominations, followed by A Star Is Born and Vice with eight each. The Netflix film is looking set to be the Best Picture frontrunner and could become the first foreign language film to ever win the top prize. In getting a Best Director nod without a corresponding Best Picture nomination, Cold War joins the 2014 Bennett Miller film Foxcatcher as the only two films in the expanded Best Picture era to pull that off.

"Roma" earned 10 nominations total, including best director, best original screenplay and best cinematography.

Cuarón gave an impassioned defense of Netflix after being asked in the Golden Globes press room about the streamer - which does screen some of its films in theaters before or in conjunction with release on its platform - being seen as the so-called death of traditional independent cinema. This film in many ways, in my life, has been a before and after. The fifth spot in Supporting Actress was open (after you figure Amy Adams, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Regina King as locks), and it looked to be Foy's, but that nomination did not materialize.
And the most outstanding snubs and surprises go to... She remains the only black woman to receive the honor. I expected it to compete in the craft categories despite losing momentum as an overall leading contender, though I am surprised it didn't get a score nomination. The 2018 Oscars can do what the 1989 Oscars didn't and recognize Spike Lee as one of the best American filmmakers working today.
While B-Coop was acknowledged for playing the alcoholic rock star in his remake of A Star Is Born, his directing talents were unrecognized.
