Earlier this week, McConnell said that the Senate will vote on the Green New Deal - endorsed by almost all top 2020 Democratic presidential candidates - in an effort to force Democrats to officially go on the record for the radical proposal. It drew swift praise from several 2020 contenders angling for support from the party's base.
"I would assume we're going to set up a situation where the FAA can tell individual citizens which of their air travel is worthy and important and what isn't", Cheney replied.
Although Markey and Ocasio-Cortez's office subsequently distanced themselves from the memo, Republicans quickly denounced the resolution as a Trojan horse for more controversial, left-wing proposals that are unlikely to garner the same widespread support those outlined in the resolution might.
The bill has 67 co-sponsors in the House, where Democrats are in the majority, and 11 in the Senate, where Republicans outnumber Democrats. On Monday, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.), a moderate Democrat from Long Island with a seat on the powerful House Committee on Ways and Means, said he would support the resolution.

Her resignation is a potential blow to Trudeau as he faces re-election this year. SNC-Lavalin has declined to comment on any of the reports.
"In the coming weeks", the group concluded, "Sunrise Movement's army of young people will be taking action to expose the moral bankruptcy of GOP elites and invite all Senate Democrats to join Senator Markey in championing the first-ever resolution to rise to the scale and urgency of the climate crisis". He said Democrats "believe that we need to do something about climate change" and added: "Do Republicans?" Ocasio-Cortez has subsequently described the fact sheet, which has been deleted from her website, as a "draft".
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY also dismissed McConnell's plans for a vote. As Vox's Matthew Yglesias points out, "They ran this exact play on the Sanders Medicare for All bill" in the Senate in 2017, when Montana Republican Steve Daines pasted a Democratic single-payer insurance plan onto one of the failed Obamacare repeal attempts.
The vote on the health care legislation didn't quite carry the punch Republicans had hoped.
"It is so interesting to watch this very hard left turn the Democrat Party has taken, and it's also interesting to watch all of these Democrat presidential candidates rubber-stamp this Green New Deal", Sen. In a statement to CNBC, her office said, "McConnell thinks he can end all debate on the Green New Deal now and stop this freight train of momentum". When asked about the Green New Deal on Tuesday, Senator Sherrod Brown of OH, who is reportedly considering a presidential run, said that he supports a Green New Deal but is "not going to take a position on every bill that's coming out".
"It would shut down American energy, which I don't think the people in Texas are going to be happy with", Trump said.
