Two Russian air force planes landed outside Caracas on Saturday carrying almost 100 Russian troops, according to local media reports, two months after the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump disavowed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
In a statement on Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russian troops would stay in the country as "for as long as needed" and accused the USA of trying to "stage a coup" in the country through the threat of military action.
The move, announced by Auditor General Elvis Amoroso on state television, marked another effort by Maduro's regime to politically sideline Guaido, who is recognized by the U.S. and 50 other countries as Venezuela's interim president. In January, Guaido invoked the constitution to assume Venezuela's interim presidency, arguing that Maduro's 2018 re-election was illegitimate.
