The school said Monfries will get receive her bachelor's degree posthumously.

Fordham University confirmed the incident and sent a letter to students.

According to the university, Monfries was climbing the clock tower at approximately 3:15 a.m.to take a photo of the city skyline.

When the police arrived at the scene, officers were forced to carry out a high-angle rescue after finding Sydney lying on the ground inside the tower with trauma to her head and body, it is reported. This is the first fall inside the clock tower, she said, noting that the university officials have sometimes given tours of the tower to "satisfy students' curiosity about it, and reduce the likelihood that they would attempt to enter the structure without authorization".

"I heard they were just getting a better view of the city", she said.

Access to the tower is restricted, a university spokeswoman told the Times.

According to United States media reports, Ms Monfries slipped on her way up the tower's spiral staircase and was found by emergency services at about 3.17am. "I don't think they went up there with the intent thinking that it would be possible to fall". "You have to go into the tunnels underground and you have to go into the bell tower".

"There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise - and mere weeks from graduation", university President Joseph M. McShane, said in a statement. I'll never forget all of our memories back when you lived in NJ and I'll forever cherish them!

Howe stated that it is too early to know if the lock was tampered with. During the event, seniors climb the tower, touch the bell and take photo outside one of the top windows. Students say sneaking into the university's most recognizable building at night has always been a tradition for Fordham seniors.
