Johnson had fun with the incident, giving people on the tee box permission to laugh because, as he said, "That's embarrassing".

As Johnson's group informed him, there was no penalty for the weird gaffe because it clearly happened while he was taking a practice swing. It was so bad that it richocheted off the tee marker then popped in the air right in front of him.

"Oh s--!" Johnson said immediately.

Under Rule 6.2b (5) on starting a hole: "If a teed ball falls off the tee or is knocked off the tee by the player before the player has made a stroke at it, it may be re-teed anywhere in the teeing area without penalty". Because Johnson didn't have the intention of hitting the ball, he was allowed to re-tee and hit again. "I actually hit a really good tee shot after that, so I think I recovered nicely".
