Alabama Senate Pushes Bill To Jail Doctors Who Perform Abortions

Senators voted down an attempt to add an amendment that gave exceptions for rape and incest. "Alabama lawmakers join legislators in several other states in putting forth legislation to restrict abortion, such as Georgia's recent fetal heartbeat bill". The amendment was voted down 21-11, with four Republicans joining Democrats in the seeking the amendment.

Bobby Singleton, who has served as the minority leader of the Alabama Senate since January, told CNN's New Day he was appalled by the state legislature's passage of a bill, which if implemented would ban abortion except in cases where the mother's life was in jeopardy. "The notion that somehow this is going to be the vehicle for the Supreme Court to reconsider Roe v. Wade is really misplaced".

The only exception would be in cases of medical emergencies, not rape or incest.

Actress and activist Alyssa Milano has called for a sex strike under the social media hashtag #SexStrike in response to the campaigns against abortion rights, urging women to refuse sex with men "until we get bodily autonomy back". "Let's be honest, banning abortion does not stop abortion".

Abortions would be legal only if the life of the mother is in danger or the fetus has a fatal condition. We made [the] women of Alabama the model of the new Roe v. Wade.

There is nothing at all inherently wrong with passing legislation that violates current U.S. Supreme Court precedent, so long as fellow constitutional actors - here, Alabama state legislators - earnestly believe they are acting soundly within the confines of the Constitution as they independently construe it, in accordance with their oaths of office.

The high court, now with a majority of conservative justices after Republican President Donald Trump appointed two, could possibly overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark decision establishing a woman's right to an abortion.

Markets plunge after Trump threatens new China tariff hike
On Sunday, Trump threatened on Twitter to increase tariff rates on $200 billion in imports from China to 25%, up from 10% now . The Trade Deal with China continues, but too slowly, as they attempt to renegotiate, " the president continued.

Democrats, who hold eight seats in the 35-member Senate, criticized the ban as a mixture of political grandstanding, an attempt to control women and a waste of taxpayer dollars.

The bill now goes to the desk of the state's female Republican governor, Kay Ivey, who has not publicly announced her stance on the bill but previously aligned herself as anti-abortion.

The Alabama bill, which passed 25-6, is even more restrictive than prior state-level abortion laws.

The Republican has not said publically whether she supports the measure. It's true that this bill strips out all other issues and forces focus on the core pro-life principle, but the Supreme Court doesn't consider cases in utter vacuums, either.

Alabama could enact the strictest abortion ban in the nation.

The legislation would make performing an abortion a felony at any stage of pregnancy with nearly no exceptions and is the most far-reaching attempt to limit abortion since Roe v. Wade was decided more than 40 years ago. The groups mentioned stated they will be looking to challenge the bill, should it become a law.

"Regardless of how the conception takes place, the product is a child, and so we're saying that that unborn child is a person entitled to protection of law", he added.
