White House website welcomes 'Boston Red Socks'

"I need you to go to a store there in Boston and buy a package of red socks".

Cora, a native of Puerto Rico, sat out Thursday's events in protest against Mr. Trump's treatment of the island in the wake of a pair of devastating hurricanes.

Many fans cringed at the optics and the message, tweeting "shame on you all" and calling out the players who went for not staying back in solidarity with their teammates.

In September 2017, several months after the team won the 2017 National Basketball Association championship, Trump rescinded his invitation to the team to visit the White House in honor of their win.

Pitcher Hector Velazquez, who grew up in Mexico, told Masslive.com that he decided not to go because "the president has said a lot of stuff about Mexico". But all of the team's white players attended. Red Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale called it "a very high honor. that we appreciate".

"It's the White House", Martinez said. The White House initially spelled the team nickname incorrectly, calling the Red Sox the "Red Socks".

Outfielder J.D. Martinez presented Trump with a branded Red Sox jersey, thanking the president for honoring the team.

The US president has also been criticised for not inviting more championship women's sports teams for official visits.

Some have publicly shared their reasons for declining the invitation, some have not.

"Unfortunately, we are still struggling, still fighting".

The Red Sox stressed that the clubhouse has not been divided on the issue; no player or coach was pressured to go, and players who chose not to attend stressed there would be no ill will toward those who attended. I've used my voice on many occasions so that Puerto Ricans are not forgotten and my absence (from the White House) is no different.

"He's doing well this year", Trump said.

"[Thursday] is a celebration of the Red Sox", Cora said Wednesday.

The president strongly opposes additional disaster aid for Puerto Rico and has repeatedly brushed off criticism about his administration's handling of recovery efforts after hurricanes María and Irma made landfall in 2017.
