Facebook's Study program pays for information about the apps you use

In January, Facebook landed itself in trouble and got its developer license revoked after it was revealed by TechCrunch that the social media company is paying teenagers to install its research app that grants the company access to user's web activity and internet usage. Sound good to you?

The app will initially be available to people in the USA and India, and will be expanded to other countries over time. Facebook will also be running an ad campaign around it in India and US. "When someone clicks on an ad, they'll have the option to register and, if they qualify, they'll be invited to download the app", Facebook writes in its blog post.

Facebook collected confidential details of 187,000 users, some as young as 13, through its now non-operational app Research that paid users secretly for access, TechCrunch reported, citing a letter the social media company sent to a U.S. lawmaker.

However, the launch of Study shows that Facebook clearly feels that it still needs this data on how people are using their phones, and that the company has learnt a thing or two from the last controversy, the report added.

"Approaching market research in a responsible way is important".

Facebook then chose to rebrand the app Facebook Research.

Facebook said it will not track passwords or account IDs and it will periodically remind people that the app is collecting their data. Once downloaded, it will transmit data to Facebook on what other apps the users have, what features they use, and how much time is spent on them.

Facebook, however, never clearly defined to what degree it would share user information through the app.

Facebook constantly comes under fire for the way it treats user data, and its previous attempts at monetizing the data it mines from its users have been heavily criticized.

Once signed up, you can always choose to opt out of the program at any time. The latter is a long-time partner of the company and will be managing the registration process, participant payments and customer support.
