Biden: I wasn't ready for Kamala Harris to attack me that way

Joe Biden said he wasn't prepared for the friendly fire he's taken from Democrats over busing, and instead tried to refocus his message on differences with President Donald Trump.

Biden's halting response to a bruising debate attack on racial issues from rival Kamala Harris, a black USA senator from California, has some Democrats in Iowa rethinking their support for the former vice president.

In an interview aired Friday on CNN, Biden said, "I think it helps having a woman on the ticket".

Biden told Cuomo of Harris, "She knew Beau, she knows me".

During that debate, roughly 18 million viewers watched Harris challenge Biden on his claims of working with segregationists and his stance against busing to integrate schools decades ago, telling a personal story of being bused to school. "I think it'd be great to have a female VP", Biden said. "You had overwhelming response from the African American community in my state...they did not support it".

Harris went after Biden on his civil rights record during the debate, in a move that defined the night and propelled the California senator in the polls. "The problem is that China is stealing our trade secrets, and cybersecurity", Biden said.

Before Biden's first campaign speech in April, Trump labeled him "Sleepy Joe Biden" and said Pennsylvania, where Biden was speaking, was seeing the "one of the best economic years in its history".

And if I had done this a year ago , you know, I'd be here aching, throbbing, and feel bad the next day. But I feel optimistic about the future.

"The bottom line is, if we don't clearly define that we are not socialists the Republicans are going to come at us every way they can and call us socialists", Hickenlooper said.

The former vice president added that if Medicare for All were to pass, the country would "have 300 million people landing on a health care plan".

"I get all this information about other people's past, and what they've done and not done".

On Thursday during a July Fourth parade in Independence, reporters asked Biden repeatedly about the debate exchange.

Harris's second-quarter total is less than some other first-tier 2020 White House hopefuls, who have already released their totals ahead of the July 15 deadline to report to the Federal Election Commission. 'He's the bully that I knew my whole life. 'If we keep doing that, that's, I mean, we should be debating what we do from here'.

She added, "My goal was to really just make sure that in this conversation we are appreciating the impact on real people of policies that have been pushed in the history of our country". "He's the bully that I've always stood up to", he said. "It's to decide who has the record, who has the ideas, who has the vision to lead the party against this - against Donald Trump".
